White paper writing
Goal:
Write an enumerated list white paper which informs investors on new AI technology which generates voices for films and television
Project Statement:
The project involved identifying important terms using a concordancer, and performing analysis of these key terms treating them as data. The data would then be turned into three main points of the paper backed up by three visualizations of data.

Date: November 2022
Project Type: School
Scope of project: White Paper Writing
Role: Writer
Collaborators: Individual
Skills: Writing, Research, Data Mining
Strategy:
As I was beginning to analyze the topic eight sources were collected and put through the data mining tool Orange and two main divisions were identified.

Two Divisions of Sources

After the divisions were identified I moved them into concordancer application Antconc which identifies key terms in a text by comparing it to a reference corpus (text). In each division a key term was identified for further analysis through examining words which collocated with the terms voice for division one and AI for division two.

I then turned these key terms into logic trees and performed collocation analysis highlighting the terms which held significance in explaining the topic of AI technology.

Finally the terms which collocated with keywords Voice and AI were analyzed based upon where and how they appeared in each of the eight sources. From this data I drew conclusions about the market potential and potential legal issues with the technology.

Learning Outcomes:
One of the main takeaways I had from this project was learning about white papers and their purpose in industry to inform investors on upcoming technologies. I also gained skills in using data mining and keyword analysis to perform research over traditional note taking research methods. This is very different from the typical process of source based research where rather than explaining what people have said about a topic, the sources are instead treated purely as data and analyzed based on metrics like effect and likelihood. Finally, I learned about the field of linguistics which commonly uses a tool called a concordancer which takes text and compares it to a reference corpus analyzing which terms are most important and the context they appear in. Linguists use this to study how the context effects the meaning of a word but for information designers we use it to define a topic based on keywords and their context in situations where a text may be challenging to understand otherwise.
